Dormer Lofts
Dormer lofts are one of the most popular types of loft conversion, and it’s easy to see why. They can be used for almost anything – an extra bedroom, a home office, a second living room. Some clients even use it as a home gym. Whatever you’re looking to achieve with your extra space, the dormer loft can accommodate it.
What is a dormer loft conversion?
It involves adding a ‘box shape’ to the top of your house, like the one in the picture below. Part of your existing roof is removed, and the ‘box shape’ is then added to give you more space and headroom. Through the right angles of the dormer and how the team construct the conversion, your sloping roof is now horizontal – giving you plenty of head height and room to move around – just like in any other room in your house.
Why are they popular?
One concern that crops up often is headroom, and that’s why so many people decide to opt for a dormer loft conversion. You’ll have as much headroom as you would in the other rooms in your house, with plenty of room to move around. There will be more room for bigger furniture if that’s something you’d like to add to your new space.
Lots of natural sunlight is another added benefit of a dormer loft. We often say that Dormer lofts are no different to any other room in your house – spacious and full of light.
You can also expect to increase the value of your property by adding a dormer loft conversion, which is a nice added benefit that you can enjoy in the future if you ever decide to sell.
The final result is a classic room, with plenty of usable space, lots of headroom and plenty of natural light.
Will I need planning permission?
Usually, you won’t need planning permission. It’s best to double-check just to be sure, but more often than not, you’re able to add a Dormer loft without having to go through the planning permission process as it falls within the permitted development category. Nice and easy!
