What is a Mansard Loft

Fun fact – Mansard loft conversions are named after the 17th century French architect Francois Mansard. Now we’ve got that one out of the way, let’s have a look at what it is, why people love it and whether it might be a good fit for you!

Think of a Mansard as an extension to the entire plane of the roof on your house. You can normally find them at the rear of your property, and they work by changing the ‘slope’ on your roof into an almost vertical angle (at least 72 degrees). There’s always a slight dip so that water can run into the gutter.

Why are they popular?

If more space is what you’re looking for, a Mansard loft could be the perfect fit. The very nature of a Mansard means that plenty of space is opened up, so if you’re looking to add considerable room to your home, it could be the perfect option!

They’re also one of the more stylish loft conversion types – our clients are often surprised at just how easy on the eye they are upon completion.

A mansard gives you plenty of options to work with, too. If you’re thinking about adding a Juliette balcony, that’s an option, and so are Velux windows if you’re looking to add some natural sunlight to your home.

Will I need planning permission?

You’ll need full planning permission for a Mansard, and we always recommend sending off for the planning straight away. As soon as we’ve got the go-ahead from local authorities, we’re ready to start work on your beautiful extra space at a date that works best for you.
